An afternoon at the beach, a Saturday morning farmers market, unexpected conversations, and getting to know the people who make a place feel like home.
By Valerie Jana | LOCALS WORLD
A Saturday in Naples... Florida!
Two hours from New York by plane. More than 20 hours by car.
After spending nearly a year up north, I found myself back in Florida, checking into the Hilton in Naples for a few days and doing what I love most when visiting somewhere: exploring.
I didn't have a particularly ambitious itinerary. I wanted to get outside, find a good coffee, wander around, visit a farmers market, discover a few local businesses, and see where the day took me.
Because while I love a beautiful destination, I'm always more interested in what makes a place feel like somewhere people actually live.
Where do people go on a Saturday morning? Where do they get their coffee? Which independent businesses are worth knowing? Who do you meet when you take the time to wander instead of simply following a travel guide?
For me, that's where the good stuff happens.
So, naturally, Saturday morning started with a dirty chai, a little outfit planning, and a trip to the Third Street South Farmers Market.
Saturday | Day No. 3
After getting ready at the hotel, I was out the door by 9:30 AM.
The outfit was very white-on-cream, which felt like an easy reintroduction to Florida after a year away. A shirt borrowed from my sister (BCBGMax, I think), vintage cream Citizens of Humanity jeans, white beads, and a mix of silver, gold, and copper jewelry.
I even got a few compliments! The jeans, unfortunately, acquired a stain later that day. SOS.
Follow me to the Third Street South Farmers Market!
One of my favorite things about exploring somewhere new is asking strangers to take my picture. No shame.
I approached a kind gentleman and asked if he would mind taking a photo. He responded with an enthusiastic, “Absolutely,” and then added, “Say hi, Mom!”
And just like that, I had the perfect opening photo for my Saturday in Naples.
I spent the morning wandering the farmers market, taking in the downtown architecture, browsing the vendors, and seeing what caught my eye.
I came across designer Daniela Ortiz and her bags, made in Argentina, and continued exploring the surrounding streets.
But somewhere between the market stalls, local discoveries, and conversations, I found something even better than a new shopping destination.
I found my local muse.
Meet Giselle | A Naples Local
I met Giselle Harthan at the farmers market.
She was wearing a set called “Soho,” which she described as the most comfortable fit she owns, gifted to her by her very fashionable cousin.
She had her boyfriend's family visiting and, despite having her own weekend plans, offered to text me some local recommendations for Sunday brunch.
One of the things I immediately loved about meeting Giselle was that she doesn't even have Instagram. (Oops!)
She's 23, calls Naples home, and describes her world in three words: ambition, connection, and discovery.
After our encounter, I invited her to share a little more about herself through our FoundHer Q&A. Her answers touch on her multicultural roots, the things she carries with her, her favorite local discoveries, and what she's currently building.
I wanted to share her answers in her own words.
Because LOCALS WORLD isn't just about the places we visit. It's about the people we meet along the way.

What comes naturally to you?
communication, connecting with others, creativity and seeing potential, curiosity, independence and understanding others, self reflection, intuition
What gift do you bring to your community?
I bring the ability to see potential in people, ideas, and opportunities. I am naturally inquisitive and curious, open-minded, and driven to make a positive impact. Where do you go when you’re searching for a bit of peace?
Cliche answer but I do go to the beach to clear my head. It's super accessible to me, living on the gulf and it's something I work very hard to not take for granted.
What local business do you return to again and again?
GLDN hour coffee (the best matcha), Wake Up Marco, MICRo, Moon Made Botanicals
Where do you gather with people you love?
I love gathering with people I love at third places; cafes, restaurants, farmer's markets, local artisan markets, art studios or wellness studios if we are feeling up for trying something new together
What recipe, dish, or food tradition feels most like home?
Growing up in the United States with a multicultural background, I've experienced how traditions, language, and food naturally become a blend of where you come from and where you are now. With roots in both Paraguay and Brazil, my understanding of home has always been shaped by more than one culture. For me, food is one of the strongest connections to my heritage. The sweet combination of guava and cheese in empanadas and a Guaraná soda, brings me both comfort and nostalgia.
Is there a local restaurant (or a locals' kitchen) that captures the spirit of your community?
Blessed to be surrounded by so many local restaurants but I don't have one that captures the spirit of my community. Will keep you posted as I explore SWFL more and more. Answer subject to change
Style & Discovery
What local business/ boutiques do you wish more people knew about?
Love Celine in Naples FL
What’s the last local business you fell in love with?
Moonmaidbotanicals.com. It is based mostly in their e-commerce channel but I met the owners at an event at Alfie's Farm on Fourth of July, here in Naples. Incredible products and amazing people.
What brand, maker, or designer feels most aligned with your values?
I have been thinking about this all week and I don't feel super aligned with a brand, although I have some brands I am super loyal to- like Apple, Stanley cups, and my Whoop
What brand, business, maker, or person are you excited about right now?
I am excited about this brand right now- seeing other people share their stories and having the opportunity to share a little bit about me is a blessing.
Where do you discover new people, brands, or ideas?
I learn about alot of brands through traveling, friends, and Pinterest!
What does your wardrobe say about you?
I would hope my wardrobe would say I am practical but elegant and classy, blended with functionality. I love basics and staples in my day to day. I think studying abroad in Europe has helped me establish my style, even though it's mostly rooted in functionality and practicality. I wear alot of Zara, Bershka, Pull and Bear, White Fox (for going out dresses), Abercrombie, and Express
What daily or weekly ritual helps you feel most like yourself?
Working out, yoga flows, writing and reflecting, staying organized by adding my whole life to my Google Calendar to help me visualize my priorities, organizing my moods by creating playlists on Spotify, going on long runs or walks, and by actively practicing being grateful on a day to day basis.
Who has shaped the way you see the world?
My parents are my biggest role models.
Favorite artist?
I really listen to all genres across the board, music in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Lately, I have been listening to alot of hyper pop like Imogen Heap to get motivated and inspired when I work, but can't say I have a favorite.
What book, podcast, or piece of art changed your perspective?
There is a novel/book called: The Art of Loving- absolutely profound and life changing
What are your favorite forms of movement?
Yoga, walking, running, lifting, DANCING
Who do you gather with? What are you helping grow?
I gather with my friends and family. Right now I am working to water my connections and girl-friendships with people my age in SWFL, to help those not just grow, but also strengthen. I think finding your place in a new community is so important and where attention goes, energy flows so I am working to be aware of my connections and actively put myself out there.
If you could direct a newcomer to one local organization doing meaningful work, who would it be and why?
Considering the fact that there is no one-size-fits all organization, I would tell people to weigh what causes are important to them and then seek out an organization that resonates with them. Me personally, I just signed up this week to run a 5k in January for the Naples Humane Society, because I am a big animal person.
What does a perfect Saturday in your world look like?
Wake up, get active outdoors (walk, yoga, run), matcha or coffee, clean a little and get organized for the week, shopping, read a book, brunch, nap (love naps) sunset, dinner and a drink, concert or live music
What are you currently building?
Currently I am building my foundation. I feel like I am laying the groundwork for something incredible by treating every experience as a blessing or a lesson, sometimes a combination of the two.
What are you cultivating right now?
Currently, I am cultivating my frameworks for life. I read to learn and to grow. I enjoy researching because I love to push the limits on status quo knowledge. I feel like my self expression has been cultivated as I have gotten older, which has poured over into my sense of style, how I carry myself, and how I interact with others on a day to day basis too!
Her Dreams
What kind of people are you hoping to meet more of?
My dream is to one day be my own boss, and own all my own time. I would love to continue traveling and exploring new places, spaces, and cuisines.
I want more authentic people in my life. I love the authenticity and connection of meeting people who are genuine. I would love to meet more people who come from different backgrounds than myself as well, to continue expanding my worldview and perspective on life.
What makes a place feel like home?
Community, memories, and whether you are at peace in the presence of your home.
What’s your favorite season?
I love the blend of summer into autumn.
What does living locally mean to you?
Living locally to me means making an active effort to be plugged into your community and give back. Supporting small businesses, connecting with your community, and putting yourself out there when it comes to networking as well. Try one new thing a week and I guarantee your definition will start to expand as your perspective does.
Anything else you’d like to share
“…I appreciate you and the work you are doing to highlight living local, giving back, and supporting businesses that are pillars in their respective communities.”
Beyond the Farmers Market | My Naples Weekend
Of course, the farmers market was only one part of my weekend.
Sunday brought a different kind of exploring, starting with a bike ride from the Hilton toward the beach. We walked our bikes onto the beach, although we quickly discovered that riding along the boardwalk wasn't quite an option.
Still, getting outside and enjoying the Gulf was a pretty wonderful way to start the day.
Next stop: Jane's Cafe on 3rd for lunch.
The courtyard caught my attention, especially the historic fountain and koi pond. I was told a well-known couple had donated the fountain to the town years ago.
It's little details like these that make me want to know more about a place.

A Conversation Worth Remembering
While exploring downtown, I stopped at the tourism visitor information booth and met Libby.
She was passing out free magazines, chatting with visitors, and had plenty of recommendations.
Originally from Illinois, Libby has lived in Naples for 34 years. She's also a solo cruise enthusiast, having traveled to Portugal, Spain, and Rome, with several cruises already behind her that year and two more planned.
I loved hearing about her travels. She recommended Bad Ass Coffee and also mentioned Sequins, a clothing store with a charm bar that I still want to visit.
It's funny how one small conversation can completely change your itinerary.
Still on My Naples List
I didn't get everywhere, which gives me a reason to return.
Tin City
There was a crab festival happening during my visit. I'm allergic to crab, and after hearing about the crowds and traffic, I decided to save Tin City for a quieter day. I'd love to wander the shops and docks without the festival rush.
Marco Island
About 40 minutes south of Naples. Still on my list!
Downtown Flea & Artisan Market
The upcoming November 5 market, when downtown streets close for local vendors and artisans, is another reason to come back.
The LOCALS WORLD Perspective
I started LOCALS WORLD because I'm interested in the relationship between people and place.
Not just where we live, but how we live there. Where we gather, what we discover, which businesses we support, who we meet, and the little things that make somewhere feel like our own.
I don't think you have to live somewhere for 30 years to appreciate it. And I don't think being a local means knowing every restaurant, every street, or every hidden gem.
Sometimes being a local simply means being curious enough to look.
As a visitor, I get to experience Naples through fresh eyes. As the founder and curator of LOCALS WORLD, I get to collect the stories, places, and people that make it worth experiencing in the first place.
And Giselle's advice is one worth taking:
“Try one new thing a week and I guarantee your definition will start to expand as your perspective does.”
So, Naples locals, I'm taking recommendations!
